Retail giant Walmart is planning to hire more than 50,000 workers in the United States. They are looking to fill these positions by the end of April 2022. The idea behind increasing the workforce is to boost Walmart’s operations.

The retailer told the Wall Street Journal that the company will fill the jobs in its stores, clubs, campuses and supply chain facilities. Moreover, the company is planning to complete the hiring of these workers by the end of current quarter. “Walmart will hire these 50,000 new associates its stores, Sam’s Club shops, supply chain facilities and campuses.” Walmart Chief People Officer Donna Morris stated in his post.

Expansion in tech jobs

Walmart is focusing heavily on expanding their tech worker base. The retail giant are seeking cybersecurity professionals, architects, developers, software engineers, data scientists, data engineers, technical program managers and product managers in their tech team. Their tech team grew by 26% during the last year. Walmart Chief Technology Officer Suresh Kumar said in a separate post. In addition, Walmart hired about 5,500 pharmacists and pharmacy managers, more than 13,000 pharmacy technicians, and about 4,500 truck drivers last year. Moreover, Walmart also raised the employees’ pay to $16.40 an hour and up to $30 an hour for selected roles. Walmart has recently announced that they are raising the starting pay to $24 an hour for some workers.

Walmart seeking long-term relation with its employees

Donna Morris, Walmart’s chief people officer stated that the company is targeting to revamp its image for employees seeking long-term employment with the company. “People are reassessing their lives, and we want to be in consideration when people are determining where they want to go and where they want to stay.” Morris told this to the Journal. Furthermore, the company ramped up their hiring during COVID-19 pandemic to meet the rising demand of household goods.

    Walmart’s sales have also gone up by 6.4% during the last fiscal year. Whereas, total U.S. sales hit $393.2 billion in 2021. The world’s biggest retailer is getting bigger. They are already employing 2.3 million associates around the world.
