A logistics company has revealed plans for phase two of its redevelopment of the former Outokumpu steelworks. Currently, it is one of the largest vacant site in the city. Moreover, redevelopment of the former steelworks site is likely to create more than 1,500 new jobs.

The Outokumpu site is located next to the M1 was closed in 2009. A section of the site was converted into two business units in 2019. This latest planning application entails phase two of the site’s redevelopment. The development will cover construction on 15.8 hectares plot. Moreover, it includes a storage and distribution warehouse with offices, a multi-storey car parking, ancillary facilities, motorcycle, cycle and lorry parking, a service yard and associated landscaping works.

Peel Logistics Property

Peel Logistics Property (PLP) has submitted a full planning application to Sheffield City Council for Phase 2 of its Bessemer Park development. They secured reserved matters approval last year. It was for developing 605,000 sq ft in four units ranging from 83,000 sq ft to 292,000 sq ft. Subsequently, a logistic business approached PLP seeking to establish a site in Sheffield. They have submitted a new application  to meet the unnamed company’s requirements. Peel Logistics Property (PLP) aim to begin work as soon as possible and get the site operational in 2024.

    “The demand for new logistics facilities continues to be one of the strongest growth sectors in UK commercial property. This is the result of changing consumer patterns, such as the growth of internet retail and the more traditional demands from manufacturers and retailers. The proposal responds to demand from a logistics operator for a regional facility in the Sheffield area. The development will provide a well-designed, contemporary development which will blend in with and enhance the already impressive appearance of Bessemer Park”. PLP said in a statement.

    Employment prospects

    The development of this new facility will also source several employment opportunities in Sheffield area. According to initial estimates, the development of this new facility will create around 1,500 new jobs. In addition, the project will also create 360 new jobs opportunities during the construction phase.
