Michigan’s governor Gretchen Whitmer’s office announced on Saturday that they have awarded a $2.9 million grant to support jobs. Moreover, the grant is likely to support 500 jobs in the food processing industry of a West Michigan City. Furthermore, this grant is awarded to the city of Hart as part of a U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration grant program. The funds aim to upgrade local water infrastructure to expand production capacity of the region’s food processing industry.

Support for 500 jobs

Hart is a small city located in the West of Michigan having a population of roughly 2,000 people. The federal grant is likely to generate a private investment of $2 million. In addition, it will create a total of 75 new jobs and help in retaining 425 existing jobs. Michigan’s economy is witnessing a job growth phase and have managed to add 133,000 new jobs over the last year. Similarly, the unemployment rate is also dropped to a record low.

Governor Whitmer’s Statement

Right now, Michigan’s economy is growing with 133,000 jobs added in the last 12 months and the unemployment rate dropping at a record rate. “Today’s investment in Hart’s water infrastructure will create and retain 500 jobs, spur local small business growth, and build on the recent, bipartisan budget I just signed. Investing in our infrastructure is critical to building communities that are conducive to business growth, and today’s grant will make long overdue upgrades that will empower the region’s food processing industry. I will work with anyone to invest in our water infrastructure and grow Michigan’s economy.” Governor Whitmer said in a statement.

Economic Development Administration grant

Furthermore, Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant program will provide critical infrastructure upgrades in Hart, Hence, this will provide the surrounding region a competitive advantage to create new jobs. Moreover, this will help in expansion of food processing sector and will attract more private investment.
