Mercedes-Benz U.S. International opened its new electric vehicle battery plant at its Bibb County campus last month. The new factory will produce batteries for EQS and EQE SUV’s. Moreover, the new facility will create nearly 600 jobs at Bibbs County.
The automobile giant organized a grand opening ceremony at the new battery plant in the town of Woodstock. Civic leaders from Bibb County and neighboring Tuscaloosa County attended the opening ceremony. In addition, top officials from Mercedes were also part of the ceremony. The new battery manufacturing plant is comprised on 700,000 square feet. It is expected to begin production later this soon. Mercedes is planning to go fully electric by 2030. The German automaker said that the plant in Bibb County opened a few months before Mercedes plans to start making two all-electric SUVs at a large assembly plant in nearby Tuscaloosa.
Mercedes selected Bibb County as the location for its new battery plant mainly because of the energy-efficient design of its existing building there. The Alabama battery plant will make lithium-ion batteries with an advanced chemistry that contains nickel, cobalt and manganese. The factory is part of six battery plants which the company has planned to build. They include two plants in Germany and one is China, Thailand and Poland each. Mercedes has plans to expand their EV footprints across three continents. The automaker says it will go fully electric by the end of the decade, depending on market conditions. The company plans to build eight battery cell plants worldwide with partners. “Mercedes-Benz will expand its partnerships with the world’s leading battery technology companies.” This is according to an official statement by the company.
The new battery plant will also bring numerous job opportunities to Bibb County. Mercedes is employing about 4,500 employees at the Tuscaloosa assembly plant, which made about 260,000 SUVs last year. Moreover, the new battery production facility will create nearly 600 new jobs in Bibb County.
