Electric vehicle battery maker LG Energy Solution is planning to invest $1.7 billion to expand in West Michigan. Moreover, the expansion will add up to 1,200 new jobs by the end of 2025.

The project is located at the company’s site in Holland which is about 155 miles northwest of Detroit. It is approved for $56.5 million in state grants and a 20-year tax break worth $132.6 million. Last week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer joined the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to announce the investment at its current location at Holland. Moreover, the governor also announced the affiliated jobs which the project will bring. In addition, LGES’ expansion will quintuple the plant’s capacity to help produce battery components into the future as Michigan’s electric vehicle industry grows.

Employment Opportunities

“LG Energy Solution’s $1.7 billion investment in Michigan will create 1,200 good jobs in West Michigan and enable us to continue to lead in building and deploying next generation transportation solutions,” Governor Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement. The announcement came just months after GM announced its historic $7 billion investment in the state. GM is planning to build a battery plant in the city of Lansing and Delta Township, a joint venture between GM and LG.

LGES existence in Michigan

LG Energy Solution was formerly known as LG Chem Michigan. The company manufactures large lithium-ion polymer battery cells and packs for electric vehicles. The company is having their presence in Holland since 2010. Currently, they are employing 1,495 employees in Michigan. As the company continues to expand its footprint in the state, LGES is providing opportunities for growth and development to its nearly 1,500 Michigan employees and counting.  The project includes the construction of several new facilities across 1.4 million square feet of vacant land.

    Local support includes an Economic Development Incentive Rider from the Holland Board of Public Works that will provide significant savings. Allegan County is also acting as applicant for the CDBG program application and process.
