Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) has received a grant of $22.9 million from U.S. Department of Commerce. Hence, the latest federal grant will help the FGCU’s students to secure jobs after graduating from college.

Opportunities for underserved communities

Securing a job right after completing graduation is an uphill task for the candidates. However, Florida Gulf Coast University has managed to secure the largest grant in the school’s history. The university will utilize this grant for job placements. Furthermore, the program will accelerate jobs placement within four leading sectors. These include health care, manufacturing, education, and transportation, distribution and logistics. In addition, the program will focus on recruiting rural, Black and Hispanic job seekers. Significantly, FGCU is partnering with Goodwill and United Way in order to provide job placement support to local underserved communities.

Assistance in job placement within key industries

The project will also assist in helping issues related to local talent needs. Furthermore, it will increase the talent supply of trained workers. Alongside, the potential workers will get the required assistance in securing jobs in key sectors like healthcare, manufacturing, and education. “A trained workforce is essential to ensuring that the United States can compete and succeed in the 21st century. Thanks to funding from the American Rescue Plan, the Commerce Department is able to make once-in-a-generation investments in industry-driven, and locally-led workforce systems that will create high-quality jobs and accelerate regional economic growth, especially for underserved communities.” Gina Raimondo, U.S. Secretary of Commerce said in her statement.

FGCU secured the grant from a competitive pool

This grant is funded through the American Rescue Plan Good Jobs Challenge. There was a competitive pool of 509 applicants who were competing for this grant. Although, the program awarded grants to 32 worker-centered, industry-led workforce training partnerships across the country. Moreover, the purpose of the program is to provide opportunities for Americans to access and secure good-paying jobs. A total of $500 million dollars will be granted under the program.
