Supreme Rice has planned to invest $16.2 million for development of parboil facilities in Crowley and Mermentau. The new production line will produce ready to eat products. Moreover, the expansion by Supreme Rice will lead to an addition of 20 new jobs. Furthermore, Louisiana Economic Development LED estimated that the expansion project will also create 70 indirect jobs.

The expansion project

In Mermentau, the company will build a new greenfield facility for the parboil operations. In addition, the facility will also produce partially cook the rice for the new product line. Subsequently, the Crowley facility will develop a new parboil mill inside its existing facility. Supreme Rice intends to begin construction on these new facilities by the end of this year. “As a processor of one of Louisiana’s key crops, Supreme Rice is both a cultural ambassador and an agribusiness leader for our state. This expansion and the new jobs it will generate in Acadiana will help to sustain the growing momentum of our rural revitalization efforts.” Gov. John Bel Edwards said in his statement.

Supreme Rice is shipping in 50 countries

Supreme Rice was established in 1936 in Kaplan, Louisiana. However, a year later they moved to Crowley and located there since then. The rice company are processing more than 1 billion pounds per annum. Moreover, Supreme Rice produces packages of white long grain, medium long grain, jasmine and brown long grain rice. In addition, they are shipping their products to more than 50 countries. “Supreme Rice Mill is a very important economic engine for Crowley, Acadia Parish, and the State of Louisiana. “We are pleased and excited to have this expansion realized and look forward to the continued success and growth of this business. Under Bobby Hanks’ leadership, the rice mill has grown substantially, and we wish him the very best in his endeavors.” Crowley Mayor Tim Monceaux expressed his views on this latest expansion decision.

Direct and indirect jobs

The state of Louisiana provided Supreme Rice with a competitive incentive package that includes $750,000 from the state’s Economic Development Award Program. Moreover, the company will also utilize the state’s Quality Jobs and Enterprise Zone programs. In return, Supreme Rice will bring 20 direct new jobs. According to estimates from LED, the expansion project will also result in addition of 79 indirect jobs. In addition, the investment will help the rice company to retain 181 jobs at their existing locations.
